Tips for summer riding

Summer is a popular time for Kiwis, their families and international visitors to head out on New Zealand’s epic 23 Great Rides.

Before embarking on your next adventure, take note of advice from bike tour operators Shane and Tina (pictured above), of Twin Coast Adventures based in Kaikohe in the winterless north.

Take your time

The network of 23 Great Rides showcases Aotearoa’s diverse landscapes, history, and culture. Take your time to enjoy your ride and learn about the trail along the way. Take time to stop and read information provided about the trail, the flora and fauna, the culture and heritage.

Communication is key

If you’re using a local bike operator, keep in contact with them while you’re on the trail. Whats App is a great communication tool, perfect if you have a hiccup like a flat tyre, or if the tour operator needs to get in touch with you for any reason.

Etiquette

Tikanga, or traditional customs and values, is important, especially among Māori-owned businesses. One kaupapa, or value, is to refrain from placing bags or helmets on tables. Hats should also be removed while eating. Tables are for food only.

Stay hydrated

Don’t forget your water or hydration pack. Summer temperatures and physical exertion can quickly dehydrate you. Plan ahead and identify water refill points along your route.

Be prepared

In case of a flat tyre, make sure you carry a basic repair kit with a spare tube, multi-tool, and pump with you.

Protect yourself from the sun

Sunscreen is a must, along with eye protection, and, if you can, a helmet with a visor under your helmet to shield yourself from UV rays which are strong in New Zealand. Lightweight, breathable clothing with UV protection is ideal.

Plan ahead

Before you start riding, do your homework on the best spots to take photos, or have a break. Also check out the trail grade and parts that may be tricky in advance.

Prepare for the heat

Ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon if you can, to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Check your bike before you ride

Inspect your bike before heading out, especially if it hasn't been used for a while. Check tyre pressure, top up tubeless fluid, check brakes, and chain lube to ensure optimal performance. Otherwise drop into your local bike shop for help.
