Adaptive Cycling and Accessible Riding in New Zealand
Getting started with Adaptive Riding
Many of our 23 Ngā Haerenga Great Rides of New Zealand are accessible, or mostly accessible, for adaptive riders and those enjoying accessible cycling in New Zealand. Others are working to enhance accessibility. Each trail is different.
Whether you're experienced or new to adaptive riding in NZ, planning and preparation are key to ensure you get outdoors safely and with confidence.
Trails graded 1-2 (easiest to easy) are usually ideal for adaptive cycling. They offer smooth surface types, are wider, with reasonable gradients, good sightlines and accessible riding features, such as wide bridges.
As one adaptive rider says: "I choose the most interesting parts of trails and ride them as an out and back. This way I can take my own time, turn back when I am ready and not worry about trying to arrange a shuttle or moving cars around. When you choose the best parts, doing an out and back means you get the great scenery twice."
Adaptive cycling in New Zealand opens the door to freedom, independence, and adventure for riders of all abilities.
