With three Trails to choose from, or the option of combining them all, the Motu Trails offer a range of cycling itineraries depending on your age, fitness level and riding ability.  You can ride for a few hours, or a few days, with trails ranging from an easy coastal ride to an advanced mountain bike ride deep in the bush.

The Motu Road Trail is Grade 3 Intermediate and goes from the Dunes Trail to the rustic settlement of Matawai, 67km away following the historic coach road.  It follows a quiet country road past scenic farmland and through forested conservation reserves.  There’s a solid 3km climb that requires reasonable fitness, but the views over the valley are worth it.

If you choose to ride the Motu Road, there are accommodation options at Motu (Motu Community House), Toatoa (Toatoa Farmstay, they also have hire bikes) and in Opotiki and the bottom of the Pakihi Track.

You can get a shuttle drop off to the road highpoint of almost 800m and ride back to Opotiki.  Shuttles are available with Motu Trails Limited and Motu Trails Hire & Shuttle.  Cycle Gisborne can organise a tour or self-guided ride for riders seeking a little extra support along the way.

Avid riders seeking a more challenging adventure can divert off the Motu Road Trail and on to the more advanced Pakihi Track.  If you have 3 days up your sleeve the 91km Loop Ride offers a taste of all three trails in the Motu Trails Trilogy.  There is also a wonderful opportunity to combine Motu Trails with Heartland Ride Rere Falls to provide a true coast to coast experience and connect with Gisborne.
