For me biking is about layers. Cycling can involve conditions that vary quickly - sun/shadow, wind (natural and generated), hills and valleys, uphill/downhill effort. Clothing choices need to be flexible and easily changed. I usually try to wear a merino base layer, merino long sleeved top(s) and finally a light waterproof/windbreaker layer. Combinations of these can be worn and changed as the ride progresses. Heavy layers can often be too much or too little, so lots of light layers give more options.
