The Great Journeys of New Zealand

The TranzAlpine

One incredible country, four iconic journeys. The Great Journeys of New Zealand has at its heart Interislander ferries and three iconic Scenic train journeys TranzAlpine, Northern Explorer and Coastal Pacific. Cruise between Wellington and Picton with Interislander to experience one of the most spectacular ferry journeys in the world. Or see a unique slice of New Zealand on one of their Scenic train journeys where you can watch the scenery roll by through enormous panoramic windows.

You can explore the beauty of Aotearoa New Zealand and choose any number of Great Rides by taking one of the connected Great Journeys of New Zealand . Whether you want to ferry to the South Island, take a train through the mountains, or experience the rugged landscape of the Central Plateau, it’s possible to take your bike and leave the car at home.

Both rail and ferry trips offer easy hop-on hop-off excursions, so you and your family can experience all that New Zealand has to offer along the way.

The Interislander journey between Wellington and Picton is regarded as one of the most spectacular ferry rides in the world. Sailing the calm and pristine waters of the stunning Marlborough Sounds is a highlight. It’s easy to pack the car with everything you need including your bike to explore the North and South Islands.

Northern Explorer

Travel through the heart of New Zealand and experience the North Island’s extraordinary range of scenery in one journey. The Northern Explorer takes you between Auckland and Wellington through rolling green farmland and virgin bush, past quaint country towns and along rocky coasts. Tongariro National Park is a highlight, a place of extremes and surprises.

Coastal Pacific

Immerse yourself in the rugged coastal architecture of New Zealand. Travelling between Christchurch and Picton, the Coastal Pacific journeys breathtakingly close to the Pacific Ocean, where the roaring sea meets enormous bush-clad mountains. The Coastal Pacific connects with the Interislander ferry and Sounds Air ights, which take you between Picton and Wellington.

Traverse the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiselled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn en route to your destination, Greymouth – a great base for exploring this unspoiled region with its mighty glaciers, wild rivers and famous Punakaiki pancake rocks. A region full of history and rugged untouched beauty, the West Coast is absolutely a destination for the bikers bucket list.

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is 139km comprising of four sections which are all mostly Grade 2 Easy, and can be ridden across 4 days. The trail starts at Greymouth and traverses Kumara en route to Hokitika before finishing in Ross. Hokitika and Greymouth both offer a full range of accommodation, services and tours and you’ll find a comprehensive list of Official Partners for the Trail to help you plan your trip.

Great Journeys do their best to accommodate your bike so it’s best to book your excess baggage when you make your booking. Bikes are limited to 2 per train service, or one bike with a trailer. Unfortunately they aren’t able to carry tandem bikes.

With Throughfare tickets, it is possible to travel from Christchurch all the way to the beautiful resort town of Queenstown, the gateway to Milford Sounds, and of course the Queenstown Trail.

Happy travels!
