Otago Central Rail Trail Classic with Adventure South

Otago Central Rail Trail

If you’re looking for a manageable adventure with no concerns about accommodation or luggage, this fully supported tour with Adventure South is a great option riding New Zealand’s original Great Ride – the Otago Central Rail Trail.

Voted #2 ‘Must Do Adventure‘ in the the Lonely Planet’s New Zealand guide book, this adventure will have you cycling back in time to New Zealand’s rural past along a trail that has been specifically converted for walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders – with no motor vehicles allowed!

The trail follows the old Central Otago branch railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch, passing through many towns along the way. This trip is not just about the cycling but rather exploring the many small towns and abandoned gold diggings, as well as meeting the locals.

Riders need a reasonable level of fitness for this tour, and the guides suggest 30 minutes of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for the three months leading up to your trip.  We would also recommend riders are comfortable sitting on their saddle for 1-2 hours at a time.

You can choose to start the trip in either Christchurch or Clyde, and finish either back in Christchurch or Dunedin. The adventure culminates with one of the world’s great train trips on the spectacular Taieri Gorge Railway into Dunedin. The 5 days are broken down as follows.

Day 1 – Christchurch to Clyde

Day 2 – Clyde to Lauder

Day 3 – Lauder to Ranfurly

Day 4 – Ranfurly to Dunedin

Day 5 – Dunedin to Christchurch

The tour is priced from $1,695 and includes some meals, 4 nights accommodation, professional qualified driver / guide, transport, Taieri Gorge Train trip to Dunedin.  The full itinerary, inclusions / exclusions, and booking information can be found on the Adventure South website.
