Tararua Traverse Section Closure

TRAIL SAFETY UPDATE: Tararua Traverse

DATE: 10 July 2018

ISSUE: Section Closure (Pahiatua Road)

A 10km section of the Tararua Traverse Heartland Ride, on Pahiatua Road, is temporarily closed because of dangerous traffic conditions.

Since the closure of SH3 through Manawatu Gorge, the average daily traffic volumes on Pahiatua Road have increased from 1400 to 4000. The road is narrow and winding, and it is now being used by many large trucks.

The only safe option for cyclists is to get a shuttle for 18 km from Palmerston North (or Aokautere shopping centre) up the 10 km climb to the corner of Pahiatua Road and Balance Valley Road. You can then ride 100 metres along Balance Valley Road before turning right onto Tararua Road, which is a quiet gravel road leading towards Pahiatua.

Phone Taxis Palmerston North on (06) 355 5333 and ask for a shuttle van. It will cost two people and two riders about $80.
