Lake Taupō Algae Affected Areas

TRAIL SAFETY UPDATE: Great Lake Trail

DATE: 12 December 2017

ISSUE: Algae Blooms found at Lake Taupō

Waikato Regional Council measures bacteria levels in the water at various sites around the edge of Lake Taupō.

They have identified an algal bloom on the lake which has been caused by elevated water temperatures and nutrients also present in the water.

Those parts of the lake relevant to the Great Lake Trail which you can’t currently swim in are Whakaipo Bay and Kinloch, (and all of the Taupō beaches), however the Kotukutuku and the deeper parts of the lake are safe.

For more information please refer to the media releases available through the Waikato Region Council.  Thank you.
