$13.2 million for trail network in Otago

A proposed 530-kilometre continuous trail network across Otago has been granted $13.2 million through the Ngā Haerenga, the New Zealand Cycle Trail: Enhancement and Extension Fund.

The Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network will see 122 kilometres of new trail, connecting four existing Great Rides in the area and creating an additional link to Wanaka. A further 47 kilometres of existing trail will be upgraded to Great Ride standards.

The Great Rides to be included in the network are the Clutha Gold Trail, Otago Central Rail Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Queenstown Trails.

The Central Otago Queenstown Trail Network Trust will now create an implementation plan that will set out a timeframe and confirm cost estimations for this work.

Extreme event recovery funding

The following trails will receive funding through the Maintaining the Quality of Great Rides Fund to help with emergency safety work and damage repair:

  • Hauraki Rail Trail – $214,000
  • Hawke’s Bay Trails – $65,000
  • Waikato River Trail – $2,313.
