Otago Central Rail Trail

Congratulations to the Otago Central Rail Trail, who have been announced Supreme Winner of the Bike Wise NZ’s Favourite Places to Cycle Competition.

The annual competition is all about getting Kiwis to identify, share and celebrate their favourite places to cycle throughout our beautiful country. These places can be an off-road or adventure trail, a city trail, part of the official NZ Cycle Trail, or some place yet to be discovered!

Almost 10,000 votes were cast during February across four categories, with one place crowned with the overall title of ‘NZ’s Favourite Place to Cycle’. The Otago Central Rail Trail also took out the category win for NZ’s favourite ‘Nga Haerenga’ ride this year.

Named after the old railway line built between 1891 and 1907, the Otago Central Rail Trail is New Zealand’s original Great Ride. The 150km pioneering trail joined 4 other cycle trail finalists (Hauraki Rail Trail (Waikato), Hawke’s Bay Cycle Trails, Great Lake Cycle Trail (Taupo), and the Queenstown Trail) pipping them all to the post.

Richard Leggat, Chair of Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail Inc. offered his congratulations to the trail, including the Trust, Department of Conservation, and the many local businesses involved in delivering wonderful experiences to visitors.

The trail is a most deserving recipient, with our surveys of Great Rides proving the trail is consistently one of the top performing Great Rides in terms of visitor / rider satisfaction. Feedback from local businesses continues to highlight the growth in cyclists wanting to ride this scenic journey, including visitors from Australia.

We would like to thank the OCRT Trust and businesses along the trail for their generous support of the New Zealand Cycle Trail and the fledging trails around the network of now more than 20 Great Rides.
