Otago Rail Trail a New Zealand favourite

This summer, Bike Wise asked Kiwis to nominate and vote for their favourite places to cycle. After receiving thousands of votes, New Zealand has spoken!

The top spot was taken out by The Redwoods in Rotorua. Areas from around New Zealand competed against each other in four categories with the winners decided by popular vote.

The 2015 category winners are:

  • Nga Haerenga – New Zealand Cycle Trail: Otago Central Rail Trail
  • Off-Road or Adventure Ride and overall winner: The Redwoods (Whakarewarewa Forest), Rotorua
  • Urban Trail or Commute: Taupo lake front trails
  • On-Road Ride: Taupo and surrounds

Named after the original railway line, built between 1891 and 1907, the Otago Central Rail Trail, New Zealand’s original ‘Great Ride’, was opened to the public in 2000.

Steeped in history, the Rail Trail offers a 150 kilometre scenic and historic journey into the Central Otago heartland. This is big sky country where cyclists will traverse ever-changing mountainous, dry and rocky landscapes, high country sheep stations, spectacular river gorges, tunnels, viaducts and more.
