Seddonville — Lyell (2-3 days, 80km)
Please note there has been a rockslide on the Charming Creek Walkway – a section of The Old Ghost Road Roundabout (extension ride). It appears this section may be closed until further notice.
Riders can bypass this section by travelling through Seddonville and onto SH67 and rejoin the route where the Charming Creek track emerges at Ngakawau (or vice versa if travelling in clockwise direction).
The Old Ghost Road Roundabout touring route forms a loop connecter with the Old Ghost Road Great Ride.
It starts at the northern end of The Old Ghost Road 4km east of Seddonville, and travels along the Charming Creek Walkway, along SH67 before climbing up to the mining town of Denniston. It then follows the ‘Denniston Shortcut’ through the remote Orikaka Ecological Area to the Lyell car park at the southern end of The Old Ghost Road.
Lyell is in the Buller Gorge on Highway 6, 34km west of Murchison and 63km east of Westport.
There is an airport in Westport serviced by Sounds Air with daily flights to and from Wellington.
Riding surface: A mix of single track, gravel road and sealed road.
Note: Do not attempt the Denniston section if it has been raining heavily; the Orikaka/Mackley River will be uncrossable.
