- Stage 1 of the Ruapehu-Whanganui Trails Ngā Ara Tūhono is being opened on July 2nd delivering a completed section with the Ohakune Old Coach Road & completion of track formation & bridge construction on the Mangapurua track.
- The track formation on the Mangapurua section of the Ruapehu-Whanganui Trails is complete however further work will be required as the track ‘settles’ over winter and areas that are affected by winter rains require further work. Sections of the track will remain muddy through the winter periods until remedial work is completed in spring along with toilet upgrades, signage and interpretation.
- Stage 2 begins in summer 2011. This will focus on the formation of the Kaiwhakauka Track in Whanganui National Park and Fishers Track from National Park to Retaruke. The Kaiwhakauka Track will link Whakhoro with the Mangapurua and Fisher’s Track will link the tourism hub of National Park with Retaruke and Whakahoro. Both take in remarkable scenery and the Kaiwhakauka has rich cultural and historic values. The link between the Old Coach Road and either National Park or Mangapurua will also be further evaluated in 2011.
