Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail?

The New Zealand Cycle Trail project was created to generate lasting economic, social and environmental benefits for New Zealand communities through the creation of a network of world-class cycling experiences. Trips along the Great Rides will enable people to take their time, get off the beaten track, meet local people and enjoy New Zealand’s iconic scenery.

The brand Nga Haerenga means “the journeys”, both in a physical and spiritual sense, and this is exactly the sort of experience we want visitors to New Zealand to enjoy.

2. How many trails have had their funding approved so far?

The Government has approved a total of $45.6 million for 18 Great Rides that will take cyclists through some of New Zealand's most iconic and picturesque country.  All of these have now had their funding approved. The targeted co-funding for these trails of around $30 million also demonstrates the significant commitment of the local communities involved.

3. Why have you chosen these 18 trails?

These 18 Great Rides have gone through an extensive assessment exercise and it’s believed that these trails will showcase the best New Zealand has to offer, including showcasing iconic landscapes, connecting communities, providing cultural experiences and providing sustainable jobs. These trails have proven they are feasible now and meet The New Zealand Cycle Trail criteria.

4. How is the construction process for the Great Rides progressing?

The momentum of the project is building quickly. One Great Ride, The St James Cycle Trail near Hanmer Springs, has been fully completed and was opened in November 2010. Construction on 15 further Great Rides is now well underway.

Eleven of the Great Rides already have sections that are open and in use. These include the Twin Coast Cycle Trail, Waikato River Trail, Motu Trails, Lake Track, Ruapehu-Whanganui Trails, Hawke’s Bay Trails, Nelson/Tasman Trails, The Old Ghost Road, Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, The Queenstown Trail, and the Around the Mountains Trail.

5. What is the next trail that is due to be opened?

There are a range of Great Ride openings and section openings planned over the next six months.  For further information, please refer to the events section on this website. The Ministry of Economic Development’s Cycle Trail project team would also be happy to provide you with further details on the plans for each Great Ride.

6. When will all of the 18 trails be completed?

We’re aiming to have all eighteen trails complete by the summer of 2012-2013.

7. How do I book a ride?

Access to each of the Great Ride trails is free. However, with one Great Ride completed (St James Cycle Trail) and sections of eleven further trails in use, there are already a range of commercial package experiences available.

These experiences range from $36 for entry to cycle friendly attractions - and bike hire from $48 per day - to luxury all inclusive guided tour and accommodation packages for over $5,000 per person. For more information on how you can book commercial packages, please click on the Visit Trail Site or iSite Visitor Centre link on each trail page.
